Rather than reducing the Aizu War to the Byakkotai, this article traces the political conflict inherited from Kyoto, failed negotiations after Toba-Fushimi, the northeastern alliance, the fronts at Shirakawa, Nihonmatsu, and Bonari Pass, and the surrender of Tsurugajo Castle.
