Sankin kōtai joined Edo and the domains through recurring attendance and return. Follow its formalization in 1635 and 1642, differing cycles, advance notices and continuing Edo households. Records from Hagi in 1752 and Fukui in 1845 show how political obligations depended on transport, accommodation and work.

English Story
Follow Matsudaira Katamori from the Aizu succession in 1852 to the Kyoto appointment, political upheaval, abolition of the office, surrender in 1868 and a later priestly appointment. His changing positions extend beyond a single explanation through loyalty.
