Minamoto no Yoshitsune joined his half-brother Yoritomo in 1180 and became prominent in the campaigns that destroyed the Taira. After victory in 1185, questions of court office, military command, and warrior allegiance deepened their conflict. This article separates the documented sequence from the tragic hero created by later literature.

Exiled to Oki in 1221 and dead there in 1239, the retired emperor Go-Toba never returned to Kyoto. This article follows those nineteen calendar years through the site associated with his residence, his continued refinement of the Shin Kokin Wakashu, later poetic projects, and the separate layers of memory preserved in Oki and Kyoto.
English Story
After the 1274 invasion, a defensive line known at the time as the ishitsuiji was constructed for roughly 20 kilometres along Hakata Bay. This story follows its coastal setting, the sections assigned to warrior groups from different Kyushu provinces, variations in materials and structure, its role in 1281, the limits of written and pictorial evidence, and the long history of repair, burial, excavation, and preservation.

平安時代治承4年（1180年）に兄・源頼朝の陣へ加わった源義経は、京都進軍、一ノ谷、屋島、壇ノ浦へと続く戦いで存在感を示した。しかし元暦2年（1185年）の平家滅亡後、鎌倉の政治秩序と朝廷との関係をめぐって頼朝との対立が深まり、同年秋には武力対立へ進んだ。腰越状や検非違使任官をめぐる通説も検討し、義経の転落を兄弟の感情だけでなく、戦時の指揮と戦後の統治が衝突した過程としてたどる。
長尺作品
現代承久の乱後の1221年に隠岐へ配流され、1239年に島で崩御した後鳥羽上皇。帰京が実現しなかった足かけ十九年を、行在所跡、新古今和歌集の精撰、遠島御百首、時代不同歌合、隠岐と京都に残る記憶からたどる。
