Oda Nobutada was not simply an heir waiting to succeed his father. He received the Oda family headship in 1575, governed from Gifu, and commanded operations at Shigisan, Miki, and Takato. Without filling the gaps in his early life with legend, this biography follows the decisions and campaigns that reveal what was lost in Kyoto in 1582.

安土桃山時代天正10年（1582年）6月、備中高松城を攻めていた羽柴秀吉は、本能寺の変の報せを受けた。毛利方との講和、高松からの離脱、姫路を中継点とする東進、進行先の武将への書状を分けてたどり、中国大返しを一度の伝説的な疾走ではなく、戦場を閉じて次の戦場へ軍勢を組み替えた行動として検証する。

安土桃山時代織田信忠は、父・信長の死後に家督を継ぐはずだった「後継候補」ではない。1575年に家督を譲られ、岐阜を治め、信貴山・三木・高遠へ軍を進めていた。逸話の少ない前半生を創作で埋めず、確認できる統治と戦歴から、本能寺の変で失われた当主の姿をたどる。
