平安時代治承4年（1180年）に兄・源頼朝の陣へ加わった源義経は、京都進軍、一ノ谷、屋島、壇ノ浦へと続く戦いで存在感を示した。しかし元暦2年（1185年）の平家滅亡後、鎌倉の政治秩序と朝廷との関係をめぐって頼朝との対立が深まり、同年秋には武力対立へ進んだ。腰越状や検非違使任官をめぐる通説も検討し、義経の転落を兄弟の感情だけでなく、戦時の指揮と戦後の統治が衝突した過程としてたどる。

平安時代清衡から泰衡までの奥州藤原氏四代をたどり、平泉の繁栄を金だけでなく、北上川と街道による流通、朝廷との関係、寺院と浄土庭園の造営から読み解く。
