How Was a Devastated Hiroshima Rebuilt?
On August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb destroyed most of Hiroshima's urban functions. Drawing on public records, this article follows residents' restoration of daily life and infrastructure, plans for roads, parks, and land readjustment, the referendum and Hiroshima Peace Memorial City Construction Law, and the difficult decision to place memory at the centre of the rebuilt city.
